BASTILLE! Stonegenge! And other August and September Updates

Hello everyone! Am I the only one who can’t believe it’s already NOVEMBER?? It’s so crazy! I’ve lived in London for well over a year now! And what a year it's been...

I would like to start off my profusely apologising for the massive delay in blog posts. My life has been hectic and stressful as of late and I just honestly haven't had the time to do this post justice. And since I have so much to catch up on, I'm going to keep this post pretty brief for each item. With that said, let's jump into it! I've decided to just do August and September updates first and October and November will come in another week or so, so stayed tuned!

August

August was an insane month. The biggest thing that happened was I submitted my Master’s dissertation! It was the most stressful thing I’ve ever done, so stressful I got super sick and ended up getting strep throat and had to go on antibiotics for two weeks. So lame. I ended up spending upwards of seven hours a day working on my paper, not because I was being obsessive about it, but just because it was so large I actually needed to spend that much time putting everything together. Now it’s just a waiting game for the next month until marks get released. Keep your fingers crossed for me!

I really didn’t do much else in August besides work on my paper. I really was pretty lame, I only ventured away from the library a few times, mostly to go get much needed drinks with friends to unwind, or to see Book of Mormon on the west end with my friend Sarah before she ditched me to go back to the states.

I also went to Reading music festival!! It was my first English festival and despite the fact that it rained right when I showed up I ended up having an AMAZING day. I saw Sleeping with Sirens, A$AP Rocky, The Wombats, Fall Out Boy, and The 1975! I met my friend Devin there and we spent the whole afternoon into the evening drinking cider and dancing to our favourite songs. It was also the best The 1975 show I've ever seen and I finally got to see The Wombats live! I got back to London exhausted, muddy, and so thrilled from spending a whole day listening to music and running around wearing an American flag (see picture below).

Walking from Fall Out Boy to see The Wombats and The 1975. Best night ever.

The last week of August was also stressful because my lease was coming to an end through the university and I needed to find a new place to live. I was going to move in with some friends, but at the last minute the deal with them fell through so I was left desperately searching for a new place to live with three days until my lease expired. Needless to say I was a mess. I managed to find a place right down the road from where I previously lived, which has been great to be able to stay close to friends down here in southwest London. The flat is okay, it’s small, but it’s a place at least.

Other things that have happened…

I went to Notting Hill Carnival for the first time which was an interesting experience. It was crazy how many people were there, and it was really exciting until I hit that point when I was just done with people and wanted to go home. Basically, there were just so many people, drinking, doing drugs and generally being altered, mixing that in with all the music and people in costumes, it was all very overwhelming.

I also went to Stonehenge and Bath which was an amazing day. I went with my boyfriend Mo (yes y’all, I found me a boyfriend. I’m not going talk about it much because I want to keep our relationship somewhat private and also because I know he’s going to read this looking for some mention of him heheee). But anyway, Stonehenge was really fun (even though I did have the song by Ylvis playing in my head the whole time) and after we went to Bath which was honestly one of the prettiest towns I’ve ever been to in any country. It was so pristine and picturesque; I could have wandered around all day.

September

September was an AWESOME month. I got hired at the Hammersmith Apollo, I got to meet my favourite band in the whole world, and MY SISTER VISITED!! Let me elaborate.

Devin and I got tickets to a stripped down set for Bastille and the release of their new album. This ticket included a set of some of their new songs with just about 100 other people and then a meet and greet/ album signing. What I'm trying to say is I got to meet Dan Smith and the rest of Bastille and chat with them. What did I chat with them about you may ask? Well none other than my hometown and their upcoming show at Red Rocks! Dan go so excited about Red Rocks he stood up and those baby blue eyes started sparkling so much. I am not proud of how much I fangirled when we left. It was amazing though and everyone in the band is SO nice (Woody and Kyle I loved chatting with you guys too).

Our signed CDs!

A few days after the Bastille show I got up early to head to Heathrow airport to pick up my absolute favourite person in the whole world. My sister Larissa came to visit me in London for a week and it was the best week ever. We went to the British Museum, went to Stonehenge and Bath (again!) and went up to Birmingham to look at the uni there for here. Oh, and we also got to see Bastille at the Apple Music Festival. NBD.

Trying to figure out the meaning of Stonehenge. And look at that rainbow!

JUST KIDDING THAT'S A HUGE DEAL! I won tickets to see Bastille at the Apple Music Fest and it was without a doubt the best concert I have ever been to (and probably will ever go to). It was at the Roundhouse in Camden which is an incredible venue and the boys put on an amazing show that was broadcast worldwide. Before the show we got Nandos and vegan cookies at Cookie and Scream and then spent the rest of the night screaming along to Bastille. My sister's visit here was far too short and I can't wait until she and I are back together so we can obsess about alt bands in person.

At the end of September my friend Kayla also came to visit! It was a blast showing her around London since it was her first time here. We went to Stratford to see Queen Elizabeth park as well as all the usual tourist spots. We went to Dishoom for dinner as well as the NFL on Regent Street!

The other major thing that happened in September was that on 23rd September, my Grandmother passed away. She was 82. My sister was in town when my parents called us with the news, so it was comforting having my sister with me, but it was really difficult for me being so far away from my parents, especially since I know how involved my mom was with my Grandma the past few years. We had plenty of warning that this was happening since her health declined so much in the past few months, but it's still never an easy thing to see a loved one pass. I wanted so badly to travel home to be with my family during this time but I wasn't able to. It still feels sometimes like I haven't had my closure, since that part of my life is still in the states. I think it'll definitely hit when I go back next, but until then I am comforted by the fact that I got to Skype with my Grandma a few weeks before she passed and got to talk to her and tell her I loved her one last time, even from over 4000 miles away. We may not have been the closest but I will miss seeing her and hearing her laugh. I like to think I got my sense of humour from her, which is just about as sarcastic as it comes. Thank you for all the memories Grandma, I will definitely miss you and I love you very much.

Well, that's about it for those two months. If I forgot anything (lol thanks for being my brain guys) please let me know. Otherwise I'll get started on October and November (hint: October involves a cheeky visit to Germany to see my parents and November involves yet ANOTHER Bastille concert!)

Thanks for reading! As always, have a great day wherever you may be in the world! Cheers xx
